A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday, August 15, 2026. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, with the epicenter reported about 68 kilometers northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara.
The strong tremor triggered a tsunami warning for parts of East Nusa Tenggara and nearby regions. Residents in several coastal communities rushed to safer areas and higher ground as authorities monitored the situation.
Several strong aftershocks were also recorded, including tremors measuring around magnitude 5.6, 5.9 and 6.1. Authorities continue to assess possible damage and monitor coastal conditions.
