Rainy weather is a familiar challenge for outdoor events. Most of the time, organizers adjust their plans, but in one remarkable chapter of Philippine history, officials attempted to make the weather adjust instead.
As the Philippines prepared to host the Miss Universe pageant for the first time in July 1974, Typhoon Iliang (international name: Ivy) formed over the Philippine Sea and threatened Luzon. The approaching storm alarmed organizers and the international press, prompting then-First Lady Imelda Marcos to make her now-famous declaration: "I will stop the hurricane."
In the days leading up to the pageant, the Philippine Air Force reportedly carried out cloud-seeding operations around the typhoon in an effort to reduce rainfall over Metro Manila, where the event was scheduled to take place. Despite these efforts, Typhoon Iliang crossed Luzon, triggering widespread flooding in Central Luzon that claimed at least 20 lives.
While the effectiveness of the weather modification efforts remains uncertain and has long been debated, the Miss Universe 1974 pageant proceeded on 21 July 1974 at the Folk Arts Theater with only minimal rain disruption.
